Western Illinois University (WIU) students have the opportunity to study abroad in one of 60 countries during their time on campus.

The study abroad programs, which are about the same cost as studying on main campus, include programs during spring, winter, and summer break as well as yearlong programs in addition to the typical semester-long study abroad program.

Undergraduate students wishing to study abroad must complete at least 12 semester hours, have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and be in good academic and judicial standing. Graduate students must get approval from a graduate adviser as well as department chair in addition to being in good academic and judicial standing.

There are three options when studying abroad as a WIU student: faculty-led, exchange and affiliate. Students looking for a short term study abroad program would do best in the faculty-led programs which last from 10 days to four weeks in which students travel with a WIU professor and group of students. The exchange program allows students to study for a semester or year at one of WIU’s partner institutions. The affiliate program partners WIU students with other American and international students at one of WIU’s study abroad providers or university partners.

"Studying abroad may be one of the most beneficial experiences available to WIU students," Richard Carter, executive director of distance learning and international studies and outreach, said. "By studying abroad, students have the opportunity to study in a foreign nation and take in the allure and culture of a new land. Not only do they get to see exciting sites, experience a new culture and taste exotic foods, but WIU students also receive academic credits for their participation. I encourage all students to consider study abroad, as this may provide to be the most exciting part of their individual educational journey."

Students and parents with questions about the study abroad program can log onto WIU’s website.
