Carlinville clerk called on to resign over FOIA requests

One of the co-founders of the Edgar County Watchdogs is calling on Carlinvlle City Clerk Carla Brockmeier to resign because she allegedly refuses to respond to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

John Kraft posted on his group's Illinois Leaks website on Tuesday that the state's attorney general recently agreed with him in a letter it sent to Carlinville.

"Today, the Illinois Attorney General’s Public Access Bureau issued a Binding Opinion # 17-009 (2017 PAC 47126) stating that the City of Carlinville [under the direction of Mayor Deanna Demuzio] and its Freedom of Information Act Officer, Carla Brockmeier, violated the FOIA by not responding to my March 18, 2017 request for public records," Kraft wrote.

Kraft has accused Brockmeier of hiding documents that are supposed to be public and that in fact were provided to someone else who requested them.

"Ms. Brockmeier, please resign, you are a failure as a FOIA Officer," Kraft posted on his group's Illinois Leaks website. "You are the only reason the city is forced to spend taxpayer funds to defend your refusal to do your job. When the Courts and the AG finally force you to turn over these records, we will gladly publish all the attorney invoices in order to inform Carlinville residents exactly how much of their money was spent defending your decision to violate the law."
