Canton Union School District 66 Board of Education met Nov. 11.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

1. CALL TO ORDER

Board President Leonard Barnard called the meeting to order at 8:05 AM in the boardroom.

2. ROLL CALL

Board members present and answering roll call were Leonard Barnard, Ben Bishop, Lori Coleman, Matt Kees, Jane Lewis, Tom Snowman, and Mark Tarter

3. RECOGNITION OF 2017 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS DAY

Superintendent Rolf Sivertsen expressed his appreciation to board members for their service to the Canton School District. The Board discussed the Veterans Day celebration held on November 10, 2017 at Canton High School.

4. CONDUCT BOARD RETREAT

A. DISCUSSION ITEMS

1. INTRODUCTION

2. CURRICULUM

Board members, Superintendent Rolf Sivertsen, Curriculum Director Jason Parsons, and Assistant Superintendent Tad DeRenzy held a board retreat to discuss the District’s current status and options for moving forward. Topics of discussion for the middle school included Lego League, biomedical, and pilot programs for accelerated students. High school level programs discussed included Lego Wedo, Business Incubator, design and engineering and biomedical. Elementary curriculum and programs were reviewed.

Options for changes to curriculum, along with implementation of new programs, were discussed by the Board. Status quo options (#2 staffing, with review/revise programs and #4 implement new programs: computer science) were discussed as viable options for District #66. The expansion of STEM programs, science curriculum, elementary STEM enrichment activities, and updates to the Math and English/Language Arts curriculum across the district were discussed. (On File)

3. EARLY COLLEGE AT CANTON HIGH SCHOOL

Consideration was given to forming a partnership between Canton High School and Spoon River College for implementation of the Running Start program was presented to the Board. The program provides an opportunity for academically qualified seniors to enroll in college classes as part of the high school coursework. (On File)

4. CAPITAL PROJECTS

The Board discussed capital projects, both current and planned projects for 2018 and 2019. There is a need to schedule a Buildings and Grounds Committee meeting. (On File)

5. CLOSED SESSION

A. DISCUSS THE APPOINTMENT, EMPLOYMENT, COMPENSATION, DISCIPLINE, PERFORMANCE, OR DISMISSAL OF SPECIFIC EMPLOYEES OF THE DISTRICT – [5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1)]

Board member Jane Lewis moved to enter closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the district [5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1)]. Bishop seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Lewis, Bishop, Barnard, Coleman, Kees, Snowman, and Tarter. Motion carried.

The Board entered closed session at 10:23 AM. The Board returned to open session at 10:58 AM.

6. ADJOURN SPECIAL MEETING

Board member Matt Kees moved to adjourn the special meeting. Bishop seconded. Voting yes by roll call were board members Kees, Bishop, Barnard, Coleman, Lewis, Snowman, and Tarter.

Motion carried.

Board President Leonard Barnard declared the special meeting adjourned at 11:10 AM
