City of Jacksonville Commission on Disabilities and Human Relations met July 7.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Present: Peggy Davidsmeyer, (Chair), Guy Crumley, Ruth Lanier, Eddie Lowe (Secretary), Brandie Belford, Sarah Robinson,

Absent: David Bauer, Mary Watts, Dan Thompson

WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER 4:15 PM

Presentation by Cass County Health

• Jenny Buchanan – Community Hope and Recovery (formerly Cass Co. Mental Health)

Services offered include: New Hope for mental and psychiatric assistance (Dr. Warren in Beardstown); a mobile crisis response team to handle crisis in nearby counties (Memorial Services handles crisis in Morgan); New to You – a store next to the Center in Beardstown where some of the Day Training clients work; Community Care; and prevention and intervention services – Level 1 and Level 2. They work with offenders, providing coping skills and use a curriculum based on criminal justice guidelines. Morgan Co. probation and justice system refer for DUI evaluations. They have a PAIP (partner abuse intervention program.)

They offer several valuable services to our community and surrounding counties.

PUBLIC COMMENT

• Peggy commented on the Juneteenth celebration that was held downtown. Overall, it was a huge success. There were some oversights noted – the lack of a deaf interpreter during the opening ceremonies and no accessible overhead shelter.

OLD BUSINESS

• Letter to the Mayor

Peggy has notified the Mayor regarding the misspelling of the road sign honoring Dr. Alonzo Homer Kenniebrew.

• Lights at Martin Luther King Memorial

Peggy went to community park to assess the lighting of the Martin Luther King Memorial. She noted that the lights were not positioned correctly. After adjustment there was some improvement but the level of brightness could be improved. Peggy will discuss this with the Mayor.
