McDonough County Board Law & Legal Committee met July 11.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Law & Legal Committee held its monthly meeting at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the McDonough County Courthouse, Courtroom 201. Committee Members present included Committee Chair Joe Erlandson, Vice Chair Ken Durkin, Lee Calvert, Eric Chapman, Travis Hiel, Michael Kirby, Terra Litchfield, and Julie Melvin. Other persons in attendance were Patrick Stout, Dave Schaab, County Assessor Deborah Cousins, Sheriff Nick Petitgout, County Chair Scott Schwerer, and Committee Secretary Stacey Alexander.

Chair Erlandson called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve June 6, 2022 Minutes

Member Durkin moved with a second by Member Kirby to approve the minutes as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

Dave Schaab gave the report. Schaab informed the Committee that the tour of the landfill planned for this month might not happen due to the rise in Covid. He will let Chair Erlandson know by July 13.

Tri-County Recycling

Received and filed.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Report received and filed. Nine Veterans were given assistance in June. Total assistance amounted to $2,366.55.

Sheriff’s Report

Sheriff Nick Petitgout gave the report. Petitgout informed the Committee that they have been holding inmates from Warren County, he is working on a deal with the Building Commission to redo an area to hold more inmates. West Prairie School District has requested to have a school resource officer Monday through Friday, from 7:30-4:30. The school would like to go 50/50 with the County on cost for this, the County’s cost would be $38,300. The Superintendent, Guy Gradert will come to the July 20 Board Meeting to discuss this with the Board, Petitgout said the officer could help with holidays, vacation, and over time when school is not in session. Chair Schwerer asked if this would increase the County’s liability if the officer is in Colchester and is needed in Good Hope or Sciota, Petitgout will check with the State’s Attorney Matt Kwacala and will discuss this at the July 13 Finance Committee meeting as well.

Assessor’s Office Update

Assessor Deborah Cousins gave the report. Cousins informed the Committee that on June 14 she attended the Emmett Township Board meeting, she then explained the process to combine Townships and create a Multi-Township. She is waiting on 3 township books. Jeri Gruel’s position on the Farmland Assessment Committee will need to be filled.

Claims Review and Approval

Member Hiel moved with a second by Member Chapman to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Other

MTC has sent out a letter that at the end of the year they will no longer be in the cable tv business.

Public Comment

None.

County Board Chair Comments

Chair Schwerer informed the Committee that he received a letter from Max Dunseth stating he was retiring from the Board of Review as of December 31, 2022. Clarke Kelso will be replacing him in January of 2023.

Member Melvin moved with a second by Member Chapman to adjourn the meeting at 7:38 p.m. Motion carried on a voice vote.
