Rep. Randy Frese (R-Quincy) recently released a press release urging the repeal of the criminal justice reform SAFE-T Act.
“More than half of Illinois’ state’s attorneys have joined a lawsuit to block the SAFE-T Act,” Frese wrote in a Nov. 14 news release. “A motion filed last week stated, ‘Because both the substance of (the Act) and the process through which it was enacted are in flagrant violation of the Illinois Constitution, this statute should be stricken as void in its entirety.’ Repealing this dangerous Act must be a Veto Session priority.”
He included a link to a Daily Herald story about efforts to repeal the law.
KWQC reports the legislation sets up new standards for use of force by police and has been criticized by many, including a majority of the state’s attorneys in Illinois, who filed lawsuits challenging the law. In late October, the Illinois Supreme Court consolidated more than half of the cases and called for the Kankakee County case to be the lead.
During the Veto Session beginning last week, Republican leaders-elect said that they’re interested in repealing the SAFE-T Act. Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Sterling), the new House Minority Leader-elect, said repeal was her caucus’ preferred route, according to the State Journal-Register.
Frese, who resides in Adam County, was first elected to the Illinois House in 2015. His legislative experience includes serving on the Health Care Licenses, and Museums, Arts, & Cultural Enhancement committees.
