Western Illinois University guard Mia Nicastro has been named Player of the Week after a strong performance that contributed to the Leathernecks’ recent success.

Nicastro averaged 18.0 points per game, shooting 77.8 percent from the field and making all three of her attempts from beyond the arc in a key matchup. She also recorded five rebounds and two assists while providing consistent defensive effort.

Her scoring and ability to create opportunities for teammates played an important role for Western Illinois during critical moments. The team relied on her composure, as she made timely shots and helped maintain momentum throughout the week.

Nicastro’s contributions included attacking the basket, finding open teammates, and defending effectively. Her play was described as versatile and steady, setting an example for her teammates.

“This marks a significant individual honor for Nicastro and reflects the continued progress of the Western Illinois program. Her performance not only highlighted her scoring efficiency but also underscored her ability to elevate those around her,” according to university officials.

The Leathernecks compete in the Ohio Valley Conference as part of Western Illinois University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Macomb, Illinois. The team plays its home games on campus and uses “Leathernecks” as its nickname in recognition of the U.S. Marine Corps, with Rocky the Leatherneck serving as mascot (https://goleathernecks.com/sports/womens-basketball).

Nicastro and her teammates aim to continue their positive momentum during conference play.
