McDonough County Law & Legal Committee met May 7.

Here is the minutes provided by the Committee:

The Law & Legal Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday, May 7, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the McDonough County Courthouse in the Law Library. Committee members present included Chairman Travis Hiel, George Dixon, Alice Henry, Jerome Anderson, Lee Calvert, Bob Mahr, and County Chairman Scott Schwerer. Committee members absent were Clarke Kelso, and Rod McGrew. Other persons in attendance were Patrick Stout, Ric Smart, Sheriff Nick Petitgout, Dave Schaab, and County Clerk Gretchen DeJaynes.

Chairman Hiel called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve April 2, 2018 Minutes

Member Dixon moved with a second by Member Mahr to approve the April 2, 2018 minutes as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

David Schwaab gave the report. China will not be taking recycling for the next couple of months, so they are looking into a new outlet.

Tri-County R & WM Report

Tim Lobdell was absent, the report was sent with Member Henry. Through the end of April, collections were down for both electronics and paint from the same period last year. Cleanups were done for Eldorado and New Salem Townships, two other townships are scheduled for cleanup in May and three others are scheduled in June.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Veteran’s Superintendent Ric Smart gave the report. Ten Veterans were given assistance in April amounting to $2,251.30. The transportation van made 13 trips to Iowa City transporting 23 Veterans, a total of 3,305 miles. Drivers contributed 98.5 hours of their time. The van drivers will receive training via the internet on May 21.

Sheriff’s Report

Sheriff Nick Petitgout presented the monthly report. Jail average was 34. The deputies handled 842 assorted incidents in April. The Public Aid savings on inmate medical March and April has not returned from Springfield.

When Deputies were going to drug training a deer was hit with the Sheriff Department’s van. Inmates have been working on cleaning up a couple of cemeteries, and have also been working on the courthouse floors.

Assessor’s Office Update

Tax bills have been sent out.

Claims Review and Approval

Member Henry moved with a second by Member Mahr to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Other

County Chairman Schwerer said that an individual has requested that the board look into a resolution against proposed legislation supporting gun control, no action was taken.

With no further business to discuss, Member Henry moved with a second by Member Dixon to adjourn the meeting at 7:27 p.m.
