Western Illinois men's golf competed on a high level once again in the 2022 Gulf Coast Collegiate. The Leathernecks competed in the two-day invitational (Feb. 28-March 1) and took 11th place with a score of +80 over par (944). Fans can view full results here.
"Cam and Wyatt each had some solid stretches of holes finishing in the top 30. Overall, we didn't hit it straight enough to capitalize on the shorter yardages," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Heading into Florida we will work on tee accuracy, wedges and mental game."
Wyatt Spier had the top performance for the Leathernecks with a score of +10 over par (226) to place t-23rd. Spier had a spectacular second round that had him t-5th place entering the third round. The Babson Park, Fla., native finished with a -4 (68) second-round score that included four birdies. The 68 round score is one stroke above his best round, which he set in the third round of the Alabama State Spring Kickoff back in 2020.
Cameron Karney had a difficult first round but ended on a great note in round three to jump eight spots to place t-29th. He shot a +1 (73) in the third round, where he totaled three birdies. Karney ended with an overall score of +12 over par (228).
Eddie Bening had a major highlight in the second round for WIU, scoring a birdie on a par five on the first hole.
Men's golf will be back in action for the 2022 Benbow Collegiate Tournament (March 7-8) in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., hosted by Butler University.
