The Leathernecks concluded their 2022 cross country season at the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Championships with notable achievements. Sophomore Logan Lommel set a new school record in the 10K event, completing it in 31:20.3 and surpassing Dan Albert's 1976 record of 31:25. Junior Olin Ortiz also improved his personal best by two minutes and 20 seconds.
"It was one of my goals in the summer to break both the 8K and 10K records," Lommel stated. "I am also proud of how the entire team ran personal bests this season. Everything is pointing towards an exciting track season!"
On the women's side, senior Paulina Wuestefeld led her team by finishing the 6K race in 21:57.2, marking her third fastest time ever. Freshman Aylana Cezar followed closely behind.
"This season was really rewarding. It was so much fun training hard with my teammates every day," Wuestefeld commented. "I am proud to have improved as much as I did. It was nice to finish strong for the Leathernecks."
The Leathernecks are building on their successful season, which saw several record-breaking performances from both men's and women's teams.
"This season has created a lot of momentum for our distance team," coach Trey Brokaw remarked. "Any time a student-athlete breaks a school record or runs a personal best, we see their confidence shift. The plan is to continue building with a goal of finishing top-15 in the Region next year. For now we will take our positives and head into the track season with a lot of excitement."
Season highlights include Paulina Wuestefeld setting a women's 6K school record at 21:20.3, Logan Lommel breaking men's records in both the 8K (24:16.8) and 10K (31:20.3), along with notable performances from freshmen Aylana Cezar and Robert Perry who achieved top-10 conference placements.
