Western Illinois University’s men’s soccer team concluded its 2025 season with several players receiving postseason honors from the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).
Senior midfielder Nathan Bessinger was recognized on both the All-OVC Second Team and the All-OVC Newcomer Team. Bessinger started every game of the season, recording the second-most minutes played on the squad, only behind senior goalkeeper Micah Ramirez.
Bessinger contributed significantly to Western Illinois’ defense, playing a central role in organizing the backline and helping secure three shutouts over the course of the season. His leadership helped guide Western Illinois to a berth in the OVC Tournament. Additionally, Bessinger earned OVC Player of the Week honors after his performance in a victory against Lindenwood University, which secured tournament qualification for Western Illinois. “A victory that secured the Leathernecks' tournament position.”
Senior forward Liam Gainey also made the All-OVC Second Team for his offensive play. Gainey led Western Illinois with seven goals this season, ranking fourth among all OVC players. He tied for third in shots on goal within the conference and recorded two game-winning goals.
The 2025 campaign demonstrated continued progress for Western Illinois men’s soccer as it seeks further success within OVC competition.
