Western Illinois University Leathernecks Men’s Baseball lost all four games in a road series against Virginia Military Institute, according to a March 9 announcement from the university’s athletic communications. The Leathernecks scored at least six runs in three of the contests but were unable to hold off late comebacks by VMI, who completed the sweep at Gray-Minor Stadium.

The outcome matters for Western Illinois as it reflects both their offensive consistency and ongoing challenges in closing out games. The team totaled 40 hits over the weekend, showing strong performances but ultimately falling short in each matchup.

In Friday’s doubleheader, Western Illinois dropped the first game 7-8 despite a four-run second inning and a two-run home run from Joe Connolly that tied the game in the eighth. Wandel Campana went 4-for-5 at bat. In the second game, Krayton Morse hit a home run to give WIU an early lead, but VMI rallied with multiple home runs and took control with a three-run shot by Seth Buchanan in the seventh inning.

Saturday’s game saw Western Illinois collect 11 hits and respond with home runs from Liam Bushey and Josh McClintock, narrowing VMI’s lead to one run before VMI pulled away for a 16-6 win. In Sunday’s finale, WIU built a 7-0 advantage through six innings but could not withstand another late surge from VMI, losing 8-9 after an RBI triple by Cole Cook gave the Keydets the lead.
