Western Illinois University’s women’s softball team lost a close game to Alabama A&M on Tuesday, with a final score of 11-10 at Bulldog Field in Huntsville. The Leathernecks, who play at the NCAA Division I level and are members of the Ohio Valley Conference according to their official website, recorded one of their best offensive outings of the season despite the defeat.

The Leathernecks (2-7) collected 11 hits and six walks, scoring all 10 runs over four innings. They held a 7-2 lead midway through the contest before Alabama A&M rallied and regained control. Western Illinois managed to tie the game at 10-10 in the sixth inning, but Alabama A&M scored once more in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Payton Brown led Western Illinois’ offense by going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Sophia Sanchez also had two hits and drove in two runs. Kam Utendorf contributed two hits and scored twice, while Hannah Simpson and Alijah Williams each added two RBIs. Five Leatherneck players finished with multiple hits.

Kathryn McChristy started as pitcher for Western Illinois before Audrey Clark pitched 3.2 innings in relief. Lillie Wools was charged with the loss after allowing one run over 1.2 innings.

The team will continue its series against Alabama A&M in Huntsville as part of its NCAA Division I schedule within the Ohio Valley Conference official website.
