Western Illinois University’s women’s softball team will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the Bellarmine Round Robin this weekend. The event will feature two days of games at Knights Field and Derby City Field, where the Leathernecks are scheduled to play both Bellarmine and Northern Kentucky twice—once each day.
The team recently completed a two-game series against Alabama A&M, where they scored a combined 31 runs and collected 29 hits. Western Illinois lost the first game 11-10 but responded with a 21-5 win in the second game.
Payton Brown stood out during the Alabama A&M series by hitting three home runs and recording seven RBIs in one game. According to the release, “Payton Brown delivered a record setting performance in Western Illinois’ matchup against Alabama A&M, launching three home runs and driving in seven RBI in a historic showing at the plate. The returning Co OVC Player of the Year displayed exactly why she remains one of the conference’s premier talents, taking over the game with her power and production. Her seven RBI moved her into a tie for first place in program history for RBI in a single game, while her three home runs tied her own school record that she originally set last season against Tennessee State University. Brown’s dominant outing not only added another chapter to the record book but reinforced her status as one of the most dangerous hitters in the conference.”
The upcoming schedule requires Western Illinois to rely on its roster depth due to multiple games within a short period. The team competes at the NCAA Division I level as part of the Ohio Valley Conference. It is one of several intercollegiate athletics programs offered by Western Illinois University and operates out of Macomb, Illinois.
