The Western Illinois University Leathernecks Women’s Softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech on April 4, securing their second series win in Ohio Valley Conference play this season.
The victories mark an important achievement for the Leathernecks, who compete at the NCAA Division I level as part of the Ohio Valley Conference, according to the official website. The team is based in Macomb, Illinois and forms part of Western Illinois University’s intercollegiate athletics offerings.
In Game 1, Payton Brown led with a solo home run in the first inning—her first of three home runs that day. Alijah Williams extended the lead with a double in the second inning. Despite Tennessee Tech rallying to take a 6-4 lead by the sixth inning, Brown hit another home run to reclaim the advantage for Western Illinois. Lillie Wools closed out the game by stranding two runners in the seventh inning.
Game 2 saw similar late-inning drama. After falling behind following a three-run homer from Tennessee Tech’s Jailynn Paderez and another solo shot from Ashley Capelouto, Western Illinois loaded the bases in the sixth inning and took advantage with walks and key hits from Brown, Ruby Tarr, and Sophia Sanchez. Insurance runs from Maria Luna and Angie Ortiz helped seal a 9-6 win as Wools again finished strong on the mound.
According to the official website, notable players such as Payton Brown have been recognized for their offensive contributions throughout this season. The team will aim for a series sweep when they face Tennessee Tech again tomorrow afternoon.
