The Western Illinois University Leathernecks women’s basketball team will continue its series of home games by hosting Southern Indiana and Morehead State this week at Western Hall in Macomb, Illinois. The Leathernecks, with a 21-4 overall record and 13-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play, are preparing for two important matchups as they aim to maintain their strong season performance.
The first game is scheduled for Thursday, February 19, against the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. On Saturday, February 21, Western Illinois will face the Morehead State Eagles. Both contests will take place at Western Hall on the university campus in Macomb.
In their most recent outing, the Leathernecks secured an 84-73 win over Little Rock Trojans at home. Mia Nicastro led all scorers with 37 points, going 11-of-20 from the field and making all 13 of her free throw attempts. She also contributed six rebounds and three blocks. Addi Brownfield added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Kaylen Reed scored 15 points. The team shot just over 50 percent from the floor and converted 96 percent of its free throws.
Southern Indiana enters this stretch as a competitive force within the conference. Senior guard Ali Saunders leads their backcourt in scoring and playmaking duties. Junior forwards Sophia Loden and Chloe Gannon add rebounding strength and offensive consistency. Transfer guard Sarang West has joined to improve depth on the perimeter. Last season, Southern Indiana averaged about 70 points per game while allowing opponents just under 56 points on average.
Morehead State approaches this matchup under head coach Ashton Feldhaus with a mix of returning leaders and international players. Senior guard Kate Dike leads the team as top scorer and rebounder. Other key contributors include senior guards Marie Sepp and Laura Toffali along with international players Josefine Enander, Anja Ekstrom, and Violet McNece providing perimeter options.
Following these home games, Western Illinois will travel to face SIUE before concluding its regular season at home against Lindenwood.
