The Western Illinois University Leathernecks women’s basketball team is set to play in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Tournament this week. The Leathernecks, who have a 24-5 overall record and finished 16-4 in conference play, will face Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in Evansville, Indiana. The game is scheduled for Friday, March 6 at the Ford Center with tip-off at 1 p.m. CT.

Western Illinois competes as part of the OVC and represents the university’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Macomb, Illinois. The team’s nickname honors the U.S. Marine Corps, according to their official website: https://goleathernecks.com/sports/womens-basketball.

In their most recent game, the Leathernecks lost a close match to Lindenwood, falling 50-49 at home inside Western Hall. Despite being down by as many as 16 points entering the fourth quarter, Western Illinois staged a strong comeback attempt. Mia Nicastro led all scorers with 27 points and added 13 rebounds, including 15 points in the final quarter that brought her team within one point late in the game. The effort was not enough to secure a win, but Western Illinois concluded its regular season as OVC Regular Season Champions.

Looking ahead to tournament play, defensive focus and half-court execution are seen as key factors for success. Limiting second-chance opportunities, controlling rebounding, and forcing opponents into late-clock shots will be important for advancing through games where possessions are critical. Maintaining composure on offense through balanced scoring options and consistent free-throw shooting is also expected to play a role.

The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks enter the matchup following an upset victory over the No. 4 seed in their tournament quarterfinals, winning 60–55 after closing out strong in the fourth quarter. Kearra Jones scored 15 points with eight rebounds for SEMO; Ainaya Williams contributed 11 points off the bench and Lexi McCully added nine more. Their defense and rebounding helped protect their lead late in the contest, giving them momentum after two straight postseason wins.
