Western Illinois University’s women’s soccer team faced the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls for their first away match of the season. The Leathernecks, who had previously lost 5-0 to Drake, were seeking a better result against the Panthers, who entered the game with a record of 0-1-1.
UNI took an early lead by scoring three minutes into the match. The Panthers extended their advantage in the 37th minute and continued their run, ending the first half ahead 4-0.
In the second half, Western Illinois improved defensively and did not concede any further goals. However, they were unable to recover from the deficit created before halftime.
During the match, UNI outshot Western Illinois by a margin of 27 to 2. The Panthers recorded ten shots on goal, while Western Illinois had none. UNI also led in corner kicks, earning seven compared to one for Western Illinois.
Six Leathernecks players logged more than 80 minutes on the field during Sunday’s contest. A total of 18 players participated for Western Illinois throughout the match.
Looking ahead, Western Illinois will face Illinois State on Thursday in another road game. Their upcoming opponent is also searching for its first win after starting its season with three losses.
