Western Illinois University Political Science Professor Julia Albarracin has received the Hispanic Pride (Orgullo Hispano) award from the International Press, Radio and TV Association.

The award was presented Tuesday, Sept. 27 at a ceremony in Chicago.

The Orgullo Hispano award was given to recognize Albarracin’s work with her non-profit organization, “Western Illinois DREAMers,” which supports the immigrant community in Illinois.

“I’m humbled by this award,” said Albarracin. ” I was able to combine my research experience at WIU with my knowledge of business to create the nonprofit Western Illinois DREAMers. With the right team, we were able to serve many members of the immigrant and refugee communities in Illinois. I have been blessed with the opportunity to do what I love doing in both of my jobs.”

The goal of the DREAMers organization is to “empower immigrant communities by informing them of their rights, sharing relevant information, and connecting them to free or low-cost services, including immigration legal services.”
