Pawnee Community Unit School District (CUSD) No. 11 will hold “A Jazzy Afternoon” 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Pawnee High School Auditorium, hosted by the Pawnee Vocal Music Department.
Fifth- and sixth-grade students will take the floor first as part of the “Treble Maker” Chorus, singing class jazz tunes such as "Alexander's Ragtime Band," written by Irving Berlin and arranged by Sally Albrecht and Jay Althouse; "The Pink Panther," written by Henry Mancini and arranged by Roger Emerson; and "Bye Bye, Blackbird," written by Mort Dixon and Ray Henderson and arranged by Sally Albrecht.
Next up will be the Junior High Chorus, which will start with a rendition of "Gotta Be Jazz" by John Jacobson and John Higgins, followed by three pieces arranged by Tom Anderson -- "Basin Street Blues" by Spencer Williams, "Route 66" by Bobby Troup and "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing" by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills.
The Pawnee High Show Choir will finish off the event by belting out three famous jazz numbers: "Sing, Sing, Sing," written by Louis Prima and arranged by Mark Brymer; "My Favorite Things," written by Rodgers and Hammerstein and arranged by Tom Anderson; and "Sway," written by Norman Gambel and Pablo Beltran Ruiz and arranged by Kirby Shaw.
