McCann narrowly holds off GOP challenger Benton in 50th Senate District primary

In the March 15 Illinois Senate Republican primary for District 50, Bryce Benton lost to incumbent state Sen. Sam McCann. A total of 19,942 votes were cast in Sangamon County. Benton claimed 50.89 percent of the votes --  receiving 10,148 votes, while McCann received 9,794 votes (49.11 percent).

In the Presidential Republican primary,  Ted Cruz emerged ahead of the pack among Sangamon County voters, claiming 34.81 percent of the votes. On the Democratic side, 52.46 percent of county voters supported Bernie Sanders, while 46.84 percent voted for  Hillary Clinton

In the Senate Republican race, James Marter  lost to Mark Kirk among Sangamon County voters. On the Democratic side, incumbent Sen. Tammy Duckworth took the lead with 12,146 votes over Andrea Zopp, who received 4,412 votes, and Napoleon Harris, who received 1,536 votes.
