The Jacksonville District No. 117 Board of Education met May 18 to consider a style guide for uniforms and spirit wear.

The Jacksonville District #117 Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the district:

Jacksonville School District 117 Board of Education Committee of the Whole May 18, 2016 The Board of Education of Jacksonville School District 117 met in Committee of the Whole Session on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, beginning at 6:00 PM at the Jacksonville High School. Members present at roll call were Mrs. Ballard, Mr. Beard, Mr. Cantrell, Mr. Lonergan, Mrs. Maul, Ms. Wagner and Mrs. White. Also in attendance were Superintendent, Steve Ptacek, Assistant Superintendent, Dana Kinley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Sarah Raynor and Chief Financial Officer, Jamie Hadjan. REPORTS Vision 117 Update – JMS - Bob Roads presented a spreadsheet containing all of the contracts for the Jacksonville Middle School project. Mr. Ptacek asked for another report that shows the amount that was saved through the value engineering process which was $2 million. Mr. Roads said we are at the starting gate with asbestos work beginning Tuesday evening. He reported that the storm water permit has not been approved but should be complete by June 2. Mobile classrooms are set to arrive on May 25 and the addendum to the Illinois College Lease agreement for that area of property has been completed. A pre-construction meeting with contractors was held yesterday. Frontier will provide the telephone system which is the same system as JHS and Central Office. There will be an hourly contract for them to provide services to move phones around during the construction phases. Lincoln – Mr. Roads reported that the proposal for the circular drive will be ready tomorrow. Mrs. Ballard asked about the hours that contractors will be at work at Lincoln. CTS advised that they will initially work five days per week for 8 to 10 hours per day. They will begin on Tuesday, 5/24/16 at 3:00pm. A Board member asked about whether a local contractor submitted a bid for the marquis. Mr. Roads said he has checked local companies and will ask for them to bid on the marquis. He is recommending that the specifications be written for amber lettering instead of full color to save money. There was some discussion about whether all marquis should be the same design. Mr. Ptacek said he would like to see more than one design for each building. JMS Mascot Update – Mr. Ptacek said he has heard some negative comments about the Middle School being called the Junior Crimsons. He said that title implies the students are “less significant” than The Crimsons. Holly O’Neil, Turner’s Assistant Principal recommended that the mascot be The Crimsons. Mr. Ptacek agreed that using the same mascot throughout 6-12 grade would unify the district. The Board discussed issuing a “style guide” for all uniforms and spirit wear. Mr. Ptacek will look into the style guide used by University of Illinois and Ms. Wagner will provide the policy that is used at Illinois College. Mr. Beard recommended the administration write a policy that the Board could adopt regarding the specifics of our logo or brand. Mr. Lonergan was assigned to prepare a logo style guide by the next meeting for the Board to approve specific font styles and colors for our logo. There was some discussion about filing for a copyright which would require retailers who want to use our logo would need to pay us for its use.
