Galesburg FD responds to 100 fires in 2016

Galesburg Fire Department responded to 404 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the West Central Reporter.

The calls in Galesburg included 100 fires - 53 structure fires, 21 vehicle fires and 25 other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $860,905 in fire loss - or about $8,609 per fire.

The department also received 304 false calls, including 15 malicious calls and 289 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury and one civilian fire-related death.

The Galesburg Firefighters' Fighters Pension Fund, which has 42 active employees and 71 retired or inactive employees, was $2,895,991 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $28,960 for every fire in 2016.
