Carlinville accused of shunning information requests, costing taxpayers

Carlinsville3

Carlinville Mayor Deanna Demuzio is doing everything she can to keep her constituents in the dark, according to the Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW).

On its Illinois Leaks website, the ECW said Demuzio and the city have repeatedly denied granting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, costing taxpayers a minimum of $1,000 before the city attorney was even called upon to help. The group says there are at least three other complaints now filed with the attorney general's office.

After FOIA requests were filed on consecutive days in mid-March, ECW officials said Carlinsville City Treasurer Jodi Reichman protested that not enough time was allowed to pass before the city came under attack over not releasing the requested information.

In any event, ECW contends that the standard response time in both instances has now long expired and still no records have been provided. Among the documents requested are credit card and cell phone statements, proof of required open meetings and public records training.

In addition, ECW has requested information about any agreements or contracts the city has entered into with Blackburn College.
