In honor of poet Carl Sandburg’s love of American folk songs, the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg will host a performance titled “Folk Songs You Never Sang in Grade School” by Keith Reins and Tara McGovern on Nov. 12, according to a press release.

The performance is part of the site's Songbag Concert series and is sponsored by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

A donation of $5 is suggested for attending. The performance will run from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Sandburg Site’s Barn, 313 E. Third Street.

“Folk Songs You Never Sang in Grade School” is a project that Reins conceptualized and developed after researching traditional songs, song craft and balladry. In addition to the performance, Reins’ work encompasses 10 essays, a website and an album. McGovern is a fiddler with classical and jazz training.

Sandburg published his book “The American Songbag,” for which the concert series is named, in 1927. The Carl Sandburg State Historical Site will also sponsor a performance of Sangburg’s “Chicago Poems” set to music on Jan. 6 in honor of his birthday.
