More than 50 citations and warnings for illegal deer hunting offenses in Pike and Adams counties, much of which took place on properties managed by Hadley Creek Outfitters, were issued during a recent two-day sweep by Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police, the DNR said in a release.
The offenses were in areas the spanned approximately 6,400 acres that were baited and therefore could not be hunted, the release said. The areas had trophy rocks, mineral licks, piled corn and scattered corn, according to the release.
Citations and warnings were issued for offenses that included unlawful feeding of white-tailed deer, hunting white-tailed deer over a baited area and possession of untagged deer as well as other permitting offenses, the release said.
Baiting, which includes using any material that can be ingested, is banned in an effort to prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease, an ailment affects deer, elk and moose and is always fatal in deer, the release said.
