The city of Pekin and Pekin Main Street are extending the signs and awning grant pilot program in the central business tax increment financing district into 2018.
Under the program, business owners in downtown Pekin can apply for a 50 percent grant match up to $2,500 and have until July 31, 2018, to complete their projects, the city said on its website.
According to the city’s website, the money is “meant to encourage businesses and property owners to invest in their property, make visible improvements to their storefronts, and contribute to the continued improvement of downtown Pekin.”
Applicants must own the building, be current on all taxes and fees, and be able to show how the project will improve the downtown area, the posting said.
Signs and awnings must comply with current municipal codes. Also, the project must not yet be started in order to be eligible for the grant.
Applications will be reviewed by the Pekin Main Street Board then sent to city staff for final approval.
