Time is now for voters to stand up, Petty says

Springfield

After months of talking with voters in the 100th House District about the issues that matter most to them, Jonas Petty now wants them to stand up and be heard on Tuesday.

“Right now, it’s about expressing yourself at the polls on March 20,” Petty, a Pittsfield Republican, told the West Central Reporter. “If you really want change, this is where it starts. If you’re tired of tax hikes, this is the time to make them know it. I think people will show up at the ballot box for that.”

For 100th District voters, Tuesday will be the time to choose between Petty and incumbent Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) in the GOP primary. Petty said given all that's happened, and what each of them stands for, that should be an easy decision.

“The one thing C.D. has shown that he’s not afraid of is voting for tax increases,” Petty said. “For all the other tough decisions, he’s developed a tendency of just voting present and that’s no longer acceptable.”

Petty said he has no problem with being held accountable and has already made his education, welfare reform and economic development plans public. He said he considers the endorsements of the Chicago Tribune and Sen. Sam McCann (R-Planview) from his district to be milestones.

“He (McCann) is so respected by his constituents for what he does and to think that he feels I can do the same is quite humbling,” Petty said. “I want people to know that I am committed to being a voice for them. I have a degree of independence, but I’ll be working for them, serving for them.”

Petty says as he’s crisscrossed the district interacting with voters and runaway taxes is the most pressing issue for many of them.

“Figuring out our long-term is critical,” he said. “We have to stop funding things that don’t get results that benefit us as a whole. Foundationally speaking, we have to be willing to change things wherever we can.”

The 100th House District includes all or parts of Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Morgan, Pike, Sangamon and Scott counties.
