State Rep. Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) held off Republican primary challenger Joshua Griffith Tuesday night in a contest that remained competitive throughout the evening.

With all the votes counted, Hammond emerged with 5,221 votes for 53.81 percent to Griffith’s 4,481 votes for 46.19 percent.

Griffith made Illinois’ growing outmigration problem the central theme of his campaign and at one point shared he was committed to turning around the state’s dormant economy by the thought of his teenage daughter being able to consider Illinois for college and beyond.

“My daughter is now a freshman and soon she will be deciding where she wants to go to college,” Griffith, a father of five who lives in Abingdon, told the West Central Reporter. “Where she goes to college is probably where she will end up settling down and raising a family. I want to make sure Illinois is everything it can be once the time for that decision to be made rolls around.”

Griffith said the state’s out-of-control tax system was an issue everyone wanted to talk about and is largely fueling all the outmigration.

Griffith moved his family back to Illinois after a career in the military, and said he felt an obligation for helping get the state and his district back on track.

The 93rd House District includes parts or all of Brown, Cass, Fulton, Knox, Mason, McDonough, Schuyler and Warren counties.
