Jacksonville School District 117 students suspended, expelled 1,515 times in a single school year

Jacksonville School District 117 reported four expulsions and 1,511 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 1,515 students during the year. That equates to 43.8 percent of the 3,456 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for two incidents with violence that caused physical injury, one incident with drugs and one incident with a dangerous weapon, other than a firearm.

Of the 864 in-school suspensions, 564 were given to boys and 300 were given to girls, including 458 elementary or middle schoolers and 406 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 730 incidents. There were 93 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 684 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 647 out-of-school suspensions, 464 were given to boys and 183 were given to girls, including 439 elementary or middle schoolers and 208 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 352 incidents. There were 174 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 335 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
