City of Jacksonville Commission on Disabilities and Human Relations met Sept. 6.

Here is the minutes provided by the Commission:

Present: Alan Bradish (Vice Chairman), Cyndy Benton, Joan Engelmann (Secretary), Guy Crumley , Eddie Lowe, Larry Whewell (Chairman)

Absent: Brenton Allen, Mary Watts

Guests: none

1. WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER 4:05 PM

2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Motion: To approve the minutes of August 2, 2018

Motion by: Guy Crumley

Seconded by: Alan Bradish

Carried: Unanimous

3. OLD BUSINESS

• Approval of changes to Brochure

Cyndy Benton distributed copies of an older brochure on JCDHR and proposed changes to be made. Eddie Lowe volunteered to make suggested changes and bring back to the full commission by the end of the year.

• Report for Subcommittee regarding First Citizen Complaint

No report

4. NEW BUSINESS

• Second citizen complaint

No report

• Handouts from Cyndy

Cyndy distributed two documents from the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights

Division, “Questions and Answers about the Department of Justice’s Final Rule Under Title III of the ADA Requiring Movie Theaters to Provide Closed Movie Captioning and Audio Description,” and “ADA Requirements: Service Animals” as educational pieces.

They can be used to inform the public and Jacksonville businesses of the rights of persons with disabilities.

Cyndy also distributed a letter from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency regarding the “Presidential Alert” taking place on September 20 to test the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s capabilities.

6. MISCELLANEOUS

• Next meeting date: October 4, 2018

• Cyndy distributed invitations to the Whewell’s 40 Anniversary Party

• Cyndy announced that this was her last Commission meeting as she will miss October’s meeting.
