McDonough District Hospital issued the following announcement on Sept. 11.
McDonough District Hospital staff members will host three different L.I.F.E. (Learning is ForEver) courses throughout October.
The first course titled “Spinning, Whirling, and Twirling - Why am I Dizzy?” occurs Thursday, October 4, from 10-11:30 a.m. in Auditoriums A and B, located on the lower level of MDH. Led by Jen Wagoner, MTP, CVR, this program will explain the different causes of dizziness, vertigo, and decreased balance as well as some of the newest treatments to improve these symptoms.
Wagoner will cover the systems that control a person’s balance and show how physical therapy can alleviate dizziness and improve balance. Free vestibular screenings will be available upon completion of the presentation.
The second course discusses “Your Medications - Keeping Safe in a Changing Healthcare World”. Offered Tuesday, October 23, from 4-5 p.m. also in Auditoriums A and B, MDH Pharmacy Department Leader Jason Williamson will provide the latest updates on current issues in medication use, including:
•Controlled substance use and misuse
•Proper medication disposal
•Newer vaccines
•Important drug interactions
•Controversies about high cost medications
•Importance of keeping accurate allergy information and medication list
The third course, “Cardiovascular and Respiratory Tests and Treatments”, is led by Cardiopulmonary Department Leader Suellen Carmody-Menzer and Cardiopulmonary Nurse Practitioner Peggy Jones. Taking place in Auditoriums A and B on Wednesday, October 31, from 12:30-2:30 p.m., the course will cover common cardiovascular and respiratory options used at MDH to prevent, detect, and treat problems with the cardiac, vascular, and pulmonary systems. A tour of the areas where tests, treatments, and preventative interventions are performed will be provided, as well as a live demonstration of lungs connected to a ventilator.
Pre-registration and a $5 fee are both required for each course. Online registration is available at www.wiu.edu. L.I.F.E. is an organization dedicated to providing high-quality, low-cost, and enjoyable adult-education experiences. The Macomb L.I.F.E. program, organized by the Western Illinois University Study Abroad Department, is affiliated with the national organization Road Scholar: Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN). It is independently administered by area residents who develop the courses, select the teachers, establish the fees, and promote the curriculum.
