McDonough County Law & Legal Committee met March 4.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

Committee Members present included Chairman Rod McGrew, Lee Calvert, Joe Erlandson, Travis Hiel, Michael Kirby, Bob Mahr, Julie Melvin, and Paul Trimmer. Other persons in attendance were Patrick Stout, Ric Smart, Sheriff Nick Petitgout, County Chairman George Dixon, and County Clerk Gretchen DeJaynes.

Chairman McGrew called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve February 4, 2019 Minutes

Member Mahr moved with a second by Member Melvin to approve the February 4, 2019 minutes as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

David Schaab was unavailable to give a report. In February they received a total of 6,499 tons of various waste. The hosting fee of $1.20/ton was up for review, effective January 1, 2019 the new rate is $1.23/ton.

Tri-County R & WM Report

Tim Lobdell was unavailable to give a report.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Veteran’s Superintendent Ric Smart gave the report. Nine Veterans were given assistance in February amounting to $1,703.94. The transportation van made 9 trips to Iowa City transporting 28 Veterans, a total of 2,385 miles. Drivers contributed 84.5 hours of their time. Due to the inclement weather, transportation for the Veterans was cancelled on 2 days which denied 7 Veterans from making their appointments.

Sheriff’s Report

Sheriff Nick Petitgout presented the monthly report. They currently have 38 inmates in custody, and the deputies handled 929 assorted incidents in February. The Public Aid savings on inmate medical in January and February have not been returned yet. The two new squad cars they ordered should be here soon. Deputy Tom Pledge will be retiring on April 30, 2019.

Assessor’s Office Update

No Report.

Claims Review and Approval

Member Hiel moved with a second by Member Mahr to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Executive Session

A Motion to enter into executive session made by Member Erlandson with a second by Member Kirby to discuss employment issues. Motion was made at 7:12 pm. Motion to exit executive session with no action taken was made by Member Mahr with a second by Member Hiel at 7:44 p.m.

Public Comment

None

With no further business to discuss, Member Kirby moved with a second by Member Trimmer to adjourn the meeting at 7:46 p.m.
