Former state university employee Herbst paid in $17K to pension fund, could collect $432K in retirement

Former state university employee Sharon Herbst, who retired in November 2017, saved $16,805 toward a pension over 16 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Herbst would collect as much as $432,112, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes West Central Reporter.

The projection assumes Herbst received $9,082 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 2 years of retirement, Herbst will have already received $18,436 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
