Mcdonough County Law and Legal Committee met Sept. 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

The Law & Legal Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the McDonough County Courthouse in the Law Library. Committee Members present included, Vice Chair Travis Hiel, Lee Calvert, Joe Erlandson, Michael Kirby, Bob Mahr, and Julie Melvin. Chair Rod McGrew and Member Paul Trimmer were absent. Other persons in attendance were County Board Chair George Dixon, Chief Deputy Adam Cremer,

Patrick Stout, Tim Lobdell, Ric Smart and Stacey Alexander was present as Committee Secretary.

Vice Chair Hiel called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve August 5, 2019 Minutes

Member Calvert moved with a second by Member Melvin to approve the August 5, 2019 minutes. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

David Schaab was unable to attend, but sent the report. In August they received a total of 5126.72 tons of various waste. Fulton tonnage increased. Member Erlandson toured the landfill and said he learned a lot and it was extremely interesting.

Tri-County Recycling

Tim Lobdell gave report. Another 100,000 pound month in August, up about 3.7% on electronics, increase in paint at almost 14,000 pounds.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Veteran’s Superintendent Ric Smart gave the report. Eight veterans were given assistance in August Total assistance amounted to $1,701.30. The transportation van made eleven trips to Iowa City. We transported 17 veterans a total of 2,875 miles. Our drivers contributed 90.25 hours of their time.

Smart reported that he got a call from the Veterans Home in Quincy and they had a man from Colchester has passed away, that they had transported him before he was there. They were wondering about assistance for the family and he told him what was available and they are working with Steve Tibbitts. They we can allow $600, if they don’t have too much money allotted to them already and what they’re expected for a funeral for them. It is well within the budget.

Pat did an excellent article on taking the van to Iowa City and services in the Macomb Paper.

Sheriff’s Report

Chief Deputy Adam Cremer gave report. Jail population is 29. Work crew is still out and about, will wrap up this month or maybe into October, depending on what is out there. They have been doing the regular stuff, cemetery work and a few odds and ends here and around the Courthouse. They helped us last week. Chair Dixon stated they helped with Colchester Labor Day. Vice Chair Hiel asked how staffing was and Chief Deputy reported they could use more help. Nights they are going well, but daytime could use another body or two and the Sheriff is working on that. If there is any lacking it is during the day.

Assessor’s Office Update

No report.

Claims Review and Approval

Member Erlandson moved with a second by Member Mahr to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Other

Chair Dixon stated nothing to report. Vice Chair Hiel reminded the committee that Budget Meetings process has started, we have two meetings Wednesday. He encouraged every member to try and attend because they are very educational.

Adjourn

With no further business to discuss, Member Mahr moved with a second by Member Kirby to adjourn the meeting at 7:20 p.m.
