Macomb Mayor Mike Inman has declared a civil emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The resolution extends the mayor's emergency proclamation approved at a City Council meeting last month.
The proclamation, authorized by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act, does not identify specific actions the mayor intends to take, other than declaring to the state that a “local state of emergency” exists.
“The act powers municipalities in the state to activate their emergency operations plans to authorize the furnishing of aid and assistance from the state,” a report in Illinois News Now said.
“The emergency declaration was primarily a reiteration of two other actions that the Council and I took early on in the pandemic," Inman said in the KHQA report. "This is to solidify our availability for FEMA funding.”
The City Council was scheduled to adopt its new fiscal year 2020-21 budget, which begins May 1, but the mayor indicated spending plans will be heavily altered because of economic losses due to the virus outbreak.
A city-wide curbside cleanup scheduled for May 11-18 also was postponed.
