B.Curricular Requests from the School of Music

1.Request for New Course

a.MUS 103, American Traditional Music Ensemble, 1 s.h.

Ms. Prosise asked if the course should be listed with other ensembles in the undergraduate catalog, which means that its course description would not be shown. Dr. Kurasc confirmed that the school would like for the course to be listed with the other ensembles in the catalog.

MOTION APPROED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE

2.Request for Change of Option

a.Music: Teacher Education

Motion: To change of option (Birnbaum/Lin)

Professor Kurasz explained that the School of Music requests that EDUC 305, Measurement and Assessment of Learning in Academic Settings, be removed because Music faculty think the topic of assessment is dealt with in a more specific manner in other courses which are more in line with the option requirements. He added that WIU’s Music Teacher Education program has the most semester hours in the state, and the school is trying to get more in line with its competitor programs at Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, and Illinois State Universities.

MOTION APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE

This request is on the agenda to be considered by the University Committee on Educator Preparation (UCEP) meeting next week.

D.Curricular Requests from the School of Computer Sciences

1.Requests for New Courses

a.CSEC 101, Introduction to Cybersecurity, 3 s.h.

Motion: To approve CSEC 101 (Birnbaum/Lin)

Computer Sciences professor Jim McQuillan explained that Computer Sciences, which has a comprehensive major in Cyber Security, thought it would be nice to have a strong introductory course for non-majors.

Dr. Ekici asked if Computer Sciences has spoken to Law Enforcement and Justice Administration or has gotten any support from that school. Professor McQuillan replied that this course is taught from a computer science cyber security point of view.

MOTION APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE

b.CS 439, Methods of Teaching Middle and High School Computer Science, 3 s.h.

Motion: To approve CS 439 (Birnbaum/Lin)

Professor McQuillan told CCPI that there is a growing desire to have computer science in the K-12 curriculum; some school districts, such as Chicago, are starting to require this training for students. He said this course would be geared toward helping students to teach computer science in the schools. He explained that students would already need to have taken an introductory computer science course in data structures (CS 250). Professor McQuillan added that the course will have a strong emphasis on debugging, reading code, etc.

MOTION WITH CHANGE APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE

3.Request for Change of Minor

a.Information Systems

Motion: To approve change of minor (Lin/Ekici)

Professor McQuillan stated that students can do the same as before, but if they prefer, they can now take an extra upper division IS course rather than taking CS 114. He noted that students might take introductory programming at another

institution and transfer in a course equivalent to CS 214, and CS 114 cannot be taken after CS 214. He explained that in this case students can now take an

upper division Information Systems course in place of CS 114, which will give them added flexibility.

Change: Remove the “and” after CS 114 in proposed Directed Electives.

MOTION WITH CHANGE APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE

4.Request for New Minor

a.Computer Science Education

Motion: To approve new minor (Ekici/Kamminga-Peck)

Professor McQuillan explained the Computer Sciences curriculum committee worked on a proposal for a secondary school endorsement, which was presented to UCEP. Greg Montalvo, Associate Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, suggested to Computer Sciences that they instead create a minor out of the 18 hours that were designed for the secondary school endorsement. Professor McQuillan stated that UCEP asked that the undergraduate catalog include the statement “This minor is not sufficient for an Illinois Professional Educator License.”

Ms. Williams asked if there are any majors that would not be allowed to be paired with this minor. After a discussion of the overlap between the Computer Sciences major and the Computer Science Education minor, Professor McQuillan agreed to add a statement to the proposed new minor that it is not open to Computer Sciences majors.

Change: Add “This minor is not available to Computer Science majors” on the first page.

MOTION WITH CHANGE APPROVED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE
