Republican lawmakers pushed back after Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton implied that Illinoisans could be punished for failing to support the proposed graduated income tax with an across-the-board 20% hike of the state income tax.

A 20% increase would raise the individual income tax rate for those who have to pay income tax under the current system from 4.95% to 5.94%, according to coverage by The McDonough County Voice. House Floor Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) responded to Stratton’s comment by saying it shows Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration is resorting to dishonest tactics out of desperation.

“Lt. Gov. Stratton threatened Illinois citizens with at least a 20% across the board income tax increase if their cherished tax increase hike amendment fails in November,” Durkin said. “Intimidation and scare tactics used yesterday against Illinois citizens, employers, employees, retirees are a clear sign of desperation by the governor, lieutenant governor, Speaker Mike Madigan, because their tax hike amendment is failing and the election is around the corner.”

Currently, Pritzker’s administration is urging Illinois voters to approve a change to the state constitution that would permit the legislature to push through a graduated income tax. Under such a system, higher income earner would pay a larger portion of their income, but it would also enable legislators to justify taxing those who pay no income tax by simply taxing them at a lower rate.

“Here’s the message in no uncertain words: if you do not pass my tax hike amendment, we will annihilate you with a 20% tax increase when we return to session,” Durkin said. “It speaks volumes that this tax amendment is failing and the Democrats are desperate.”
