Brown County Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education Met Nov. 4.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The special meeting of the Board of Education was held at  5:00 p.m. in the Brown County High School Band Room and via Zoom video conference. The meeting  was called to order by Philip Krupps. The minutes were recorded by McKenzie Taute. 

On roll call: Krupps, yea; Blaesing, absent; Blakeley, yea; Hughes, yea; Heinecke, absent; Fullerton, yea;  McCaskill, yea. 

In person attendance: Curt Simonson, Diane Robertson, Todd Fox, Kris Gallaher, Tracy Conley, McKenzie  Taute, Pollee Craven, Shelly Sheffler, Mary Ingram. 

In attendance via Zoom: Dan Long, Sally Ruble. 

Committee Reports: Krupps mentioned that a meeting with the building and grounds committee is  needed. Director of maintenance, James McKay, has a few projects coming up that need to be  discussed.  

Motion by Fullerton, seconded by McCaskill, to approve to the Consent Agenda. 

Roll call: McCaskill, yea; Fullerton, yea; Hughes, yea; Blakeley, yea; Krupps, yea. 

Motion Carried. 

Discussion Items: 

Board president, Philip Krupps, discussed the recent changes in guidelines regarding winter sports. The  board discussed in length the importance of the health of student athletes along with giving students  the opportunity to participate in winter sports. Krupps wanted to assure the community that the board  is reviewing all the information provided by the IHSA and IDPH. Athletic Director, Dave Phelps,  addressed the board with questions on upcoming practices and contact days. The board was in  agreeance to allow scheduled practices to take place. Krupps explained that if guidance came down that  discouraged such activities then the board would need to reevaluate and possibly make changes. 

Diane Robertson and Todd Fox of School Exec Connect met with the board to discuss the scope of the  permanent superintendent search. Diane discussed the initial search process which includes the  opportunity for staff, parents, and community members to participate in the candidate search. Diane  explained that there would be online surveys, focus groups, and an open forum to allow as much  feedback as possible. Diane explained they will narrow the search to six candidates and then after  conducting interviews that pool would be reduced to three for the final interview process. School Exec  Connect will provide salary and benefit comparisons for 10-15 surrounding districts to ensure the district is on track with compensation.  

Motion by Krupps, seconded by Fullerton, to go enter closed session to approve any matter  discussed in closed session as necessary including the approval of personnel employment,  release, and other personnel items that may require action, and limited to those matters authorized for discussion in executive session by motion of the Board. Closed Session on the  following subjects: a) the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or  dismissal of specific employees of the School District; or other matters appropriate for a closed  meeting pursuant to the Open Meetings Act at 6:36 PM.

Motion Carried. 

Motion by Blaesing, seconded by Hughes, to exit closed session at 7:30 p.m.

Motion Carried. 

Motion by Blakeley, seconded by Hughes, to approve the minutes of closed session. 

Roll call: Fullerton, yea; Krupps, yea; Blakeley, yea; McCaskill, yea; Hughes, yea. 

Motion Carried 

Motion by Hughes, seconded by Blakeley, to adjourn at 7:31 p.m. 

Motion carried by acclamation.
