Sen. Sally Turner (R) said Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s budget proposal failed to address the root causes of the state’s deficit.

“It didn't address the pension crisis, businesses on the brink of bankruptcy, nor escalating property taxes,” Turner said in a statement. “And, in addition, our sales tax revenue for local governments is of the utmost importance for the continuance of responsible government on our local levels.”

For these and other problems facing the state, Turner said she looks forward to working with her colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

“I'm brand new, and I look forward to doing whatever we can to help come up with cohesive solid solutions to problems in our state,” she said.

Pritzker earlier proposed a 2022 budget he referred to as “challenging.” This is $1.8 billion less compared to 2021’s budget.

The proposal does not have across-the-board tax increases but includes $60 million of funding to the Department of Employment Security that will support new call center positions throughout the state, help run the newly created federal unemployment programs, and gives grants to small businesses.
