Brown County Community Unit School District 1 Board Met April 28.

The special meeting of the Brown County Board of Education was held at 6:15 p.m. in the Brown County High School band room and via Zoom video conference. The meeting was called to order by Superintendent, Curt Simonson. The minutes were recorded by Pollee Craven and McKenzie Taute.

Reorganization of Board
Attorney, Jeff Terry, administered the Oath of Office to all Board Members. Superintendent Simonson was appointed as president pro tem. Pollee Craven was appointed as secretary pro tem.

Visitors: Mrs. Craven introduced April student of the month, Megan Miller. Craven read aloud the nomination she received describing Megan’s success and accomplishments.
Correspondence: Fullerton made note of the $448.60 Affinity Card donation from Brown County State Bank.
Reports: Mrs. Craven reminded everyone that prom will be held May 1 at the fairgrounds. Craven noted they are taking many precautions, including screening attendees at the door. Mrs. Craven also thanked class sponsors, Nichole Miller and Melissa Markert for their hard work on putting the event together.
Dr. Simonson spoke to the Board about a recent walk through he completed with maintenance director, James McKay, and incoming Superintendent Dr. Eberle. McKay is working on prioritizing a list of building needs. Simonson mentioned the possibility of upgrading the high school kitchen with some available grants.
Dr. Simonson gave the Board an updated report on each fund and the projected fund balance at the end of FY 21. The projected expenses and revenues for each fund are reflected in the chart below. Simonson told the Board that the state is currently caught up on all payments to the district.

Return-To-Learn: Dr. Simonson discussed the recent change to the school calendar that will allow May 24, 25, & 26 to be used as remote planning days for teachers. Simonson explained the days will be used for staff to develop and create a re-entry plan for the 2021-2022 school year. This change will mean the last student attendance day will be May 21. Simonson also noted that in the event the Governor would declare the end of the pandemic before the remote planning days, the district would need to amend the calendar and put a different plan in place.

Dr. Simonson discussed the need to transfer $600,000 from Tort to Operations and Maintenance. Simonson went on to say that the presented resolution is part one of a two-part transfer that will take place over the next month. Simonson discussed that the district has the ability to transfer bond dollars originally put in Tort to Operations and Maintenance and then on to the Education fund. Motion by Blaesing, seconded by Fullerton, to Approve Resolution Authorizing the Interfund Loan of $600,000 from the Tort Fund to the Operations and Maintenance Fund.
