City of Jacksonville Commission on Disabilities and Human Relations met May 5.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Present: Peggy Davidsmeyer, (Chair), David Bauer (Vice Chair), Guy Crumley, Ruth Lanier, Eddie Lowe (Secretary), Brandie Belford

Absent: Dan Thompson, Sarah Robinson, Mary Watts

Guests: Ted Huber

WELCOME AND CALL TO ORDER 4:15 PM

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Motion: To approve the minutes of March 2022

Carried: Unanimous

PUBLIC COMMENT

• Ted has questions regarding Dan’s proposal. A written copy was provided.

OLD BUSINESS

• Dan’s Proposal’s

Peggy talked with Jean Jumper to discuss the transportation voucher portion of Dan’s plan. Peggy met with advocates with JACIL and they are willing to administer this program. They will contact local businesses for monetary donations. In addition, they will contact local agencies for clothing donations and other necessities.

• Action Plan

There is a process for reporting complaints. Steps to make the community aware of the process need to be addressed. Using the brochure that was developed a few years ago may be an effective tool.

Inner Agency Council

Peggy is a member of this Council which consists of representatives from local service agencies. She will recruit guest speakers from this Council to present at up-coming Commission meetings.

Morgan County Needs Assessment

Peggy will keep the Commission updated on the progress of the survey.

Jacksonville Regional Economic Developmental Corporation

There are plans to rebrand the city. Peggy asked the chair to consider disabled individuals and diversity in their planning.

NEW BUSINESS.

• African American History Museum

Opening will be in conjunction with the Juneteenth celebration which will be held on June 18th . The Museum will be housed at the Asa Talcott House at 859 Grove St.

• Dr. Alonzo Homer Kenniebrew

Dr. Kenniebrew will be honored with a mural during the Juneteenth Celebration

MISCELLANEOUS

• Ruth notified the Commission the sign honoring Dr. Kenniebrew in East Cemetery is misspelled.
