State Senator Steve McClure | Illinois General Assembly
The Illinois Senate has recently taken a significant step towards protecting abused children and ensuring they can remain in their familiar school environments. State Senator Steve McClure, the proponent of the legislation, emphasized the importance of this move to provide stability for vulnerable children.
Senator McClure expressed, "Abused children who have been removed from their home have already suffered enough, they shouldn’t be pulled from their school and their friends and dropped into a strange environment."
The legislation, known as Senate Bill 2824, addresses the current issue where children removed from their homes by the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) may be placed in a different home, potentially outside of their original school district. Senator McClure's bill aims to ensure that these children can continue their education in the district where they resided before being removed from their homes.
"Under current law, depending on what home children are placed in by DCFS, they may or may not be able to attend school in the district where they previously resided," Senator McClure highlighted.
Senate Bill 2824 closes this gap in the system and guarantees that all children removed by DCFS can attend their original school district if it is deemed in the child's best interest. This includes scenarios where students transition between different school levels.
Senator McClure emphasized, "This is the right thing to do to help ensure stability for kids who may desperately need it."
The bill has successfully passed the Senate and is now awaiting further action in the Illinois House, marking a positive advancement in protecting the educational continuity and well-being of abused children in the state.
