McDonough County Board Law & Legal Committee met June 3.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

The Law & Legal Committee held its monthly meeting on Monday, June 3, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was held at the McDonough County Courthouse, Courtroom 201. Committee Members present included Committee Chair Joe Erlandson, Vice Chair Ken Durkin, Eric Blakeley, Eric Chapman, Letha Clark, and Travis Hiel. Members Terra Litchfield and Michael Kirby were absent. Other persons in attendance were Patrick Stout, Dave Schaab, Ric Smart, Deborah Cousins, Sheriff Nick Petitgout, County Chair Scott Schwerer, and Deputy Clerk Stacey Alexander.

Chair Erlandson called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Review & Approve May 6, 2024 Minutes

Member Durkin moved with a second by Member Chapman to approve the minutes with corrections. Motion carried on a voice vote.

Waste Management Update

Dave Schaab gave the report. Schaab informed the Committee that they are re-evaluating the recycling program, and that all of the new trucks will have cameras on them.

Tri-County Recycling

Report received and filed.

Veteran’s Assistance and Van Report

Ric Smart gave the report. Seven Veterans were given assistance in May. Total assistance amounted to $1,804.00.

Sheriff’s Report

Sheriff Nick Petitgout gave the report. Petitgout informed the Committee that a new Deputy has been hired. County Chair Schwerer stated that he received a complaint regarding speeding on East Grant Street in Macomb. Schwerer will also address this at the Road and Bridge meeting this month about possibly reducing the speed limit.

Assessor’s Office Update

Assessor Deborah Cousins gave the report. County Chair Schwerer informed the Committee that the Farm Land Committee had a meeting on June 3rd, they voted to raise the farm land taxes by 10% for the year 2025.

Claims Review and Approval

Member Clark moved with a second by Member Chapman to approve the claims as submitted. Motion carried on a voice vote.

County Board Chair Comments

County Chair Schwerer read a letter to the Committee that he received from Judge Cavanaugh informing the Board that Scott Terry will be the new Public Defender.

Member Blakeley moved with a second by Member Durkin to adjourn the meeting at 7:34 p.m. Motion carried on a voice vote.
