Western Illinois cross country to compete in Northern Illinois Huskie Opener

The Western Illinois University cross country team will continue its season this Friday by participating in the Northern Illinois Huskie Opener in DeKalb.

The event begins with the women's 5k race at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's four-mile race. Competing teams for the women's event include Chicago State, DePaul, Highland CC, Kishwaukee College, McKendree, NIU, Northwestern Sauk Valley CC, and Western Illinois. The men's event will feature teams from Chicago State, DePaul, Highland CC, Kishwaukee College, McKendree, Northwestern Sauk Valley CC and Western Illinois.

In their last outing at the Walt Crawford Invitational hosted by Eastern Illinois last Friday, the Western Illinois women’s team finished second overall with a score of 40 points. Madison Trevena led her team by finishing second overall with a time of 18 minutes and 18.5 seconds. Maleigha Huston secured fifth place with a time of 19:23.5. Freshman Kinze Kirkland-Shea also had a strong debut, finishing 11th with a time of 19:58.00.

The Leatherneck men did not field a complete team but entered three runners in last week's meet. Logan Lommel finished fourth overall with a time of 15:31.4 while Logan Beckmier placed ninth at 15:48.8.

Next Friday, the Leathernecks will compete in the Illinois State Redbird Invite in Bloomington-Normal.
