Western Illinois University men's soccer team secured a 3-2 victory against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Sunday night in Spokane, Washington. The Leathernecks aimed to achieve their first win over a Division I opponent, while the Bulldogs entered the match with a strong 6-1 record and a recent away win over #9 Seattle.

Gonzaga capitalized early, scoring in the fourth minute. However, Western Illinois responded as freshman forward Ty Duax navigated through defenders into the box, leading to Liam Gainey scoring his second goal of the season off a deflection.

In the 22nd minute, Gonzaga appeared to retake the lead with a header but was ruled offside. On the subsequent free kick, Duax scored his career-first goal from midfield, giving Western Illinois a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The second half saw both teams creating opportunities. Western Illinois' Gainey and Xavier Gagnon had early shots saved. Gonzaga equalized in the 66th minute against Youssou Ouendeno, who played as goalkeeper in the second half.

Western Illinois regained control in the 75th minute when Oscar Olingdahl set up Jimmy Baars for a pass to Xavier Gagnon. Gagnon then assisted Tyler Philpott for what became the game-winning goal. Philpott's first goal of his career came at a crucial moment.

In the final minutes, Western Illinois defended effectively against seven Gonzaga shots, with Ouendeno making three critical saves. This victory marked their first road win since October 22, 2022, and their first non-conference road win since October 23, 2018.

Western Illinois will next face Northern Illinois at home on Friday at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
