Western Illinois University's Men's Soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over IU Indianapolis on Tuesday night, marking their third consecutive win. This result continues their impressive run, having won four of their last five matches.
Jimmy Baars, who was recently named OVC Offensive Player of the Week, initiated the Leathernecks' offensive efforts with a long-range shot that was saved. Goalkeeper Alexis Michaud, recognized as OVC Goalkeeper of the Week for his performance against NIU, maintained a clean sheet in the first half with two crucial saves.
In the tenth minute, Leevi Swearengen made an incisive run and took a shot following a deep pass from Joel McIntyre, but the Jaguar keeper managed to deflect it for a corner. Despite consecutive corner kicks, WIU did not score.
Baars had another notable attempt in the 20th minute that was also saved. The Leathernecks then made four substitutions in the 31st minute, bringing on Benjamin Graham at right back and replacing all three forwards with Liam Gainey, Tyler Philpott, and Diego Porras. These changes quickly revitalized WIU's offense.
"Liam and Diego changed the game," said Leatherneck head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "They came in and were ready to go and were immediately aggressive." Porras scored first by capitalizing on a clearance attempt to make it 1-0. Shortly after, Gainey doubled the lead with a goal following a through ball from Graham.
In the second half, Micah Ramirez replaced Michaud as goalkeeper. Western Illinois created several chances early on but failed to extend their lead further. The defense held firm until IU Indianapolis scored late in the game to narrow the margin. A critical save by Ramirez in the 84th minute ensured WIU's victory.
With this win, Western Illinois improved to 5-3-1 for the season under Dr. Eric Johnson's leadership—marking their best start since 2008 when they began with six straight victories. Their next challenge is starting OVC play with three road games beginning Saturday at Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia.
