Western Illinois University Men's Soccer team faced a challenging start to their conference play on Saturday night. Despite entering the match with three consecutive wins and victories in five of their last six games, the Leathernecks were defeated by the Liberty Flames.
The game began with Liberty's Michael Huss scoring in the 17th minute, giving his team an early lead. The Leatherneck defense managed to keep the score at 1-0 until halftime.
In the second half, Huss scored again in the 55th minute and completed his hat trick in the 61st minute, extending Liberty's lead to 3-0. Western Illinois faced further setbacks when their captain Joel McIntyre received a red card in the 65th minute, resulting in his suspension for next Thursday's game against Houston Christian.
Liam Gainey, a forward for Western Illinois, scored his fifth goal of the season to bring some hope to his team despite being down to ten men. However, Liberty continued to dominate and added four more goals over the next 33 minutes, ending the match with a final score of 7-1.
The statistics reflected Liberty's dominance as Western Illinois lost both the shot battle (18-6) and corner battle (8-3).
Western Illinois will continue their Ohio Valley Conference play on Thursday with an away game against Houston Christian University.
