On September 26, 2024, we at West Central Reporter sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Schuyler County. The request was for records detailing all payments made to vendors from January 1, 2024, until the date of the request.
The specific fields requested were the vendor name, transaction date, transaction description, and amount. As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to these public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In light of the recent developments in Illinois' infrastructure projects, this information will help us provide an accurate account of how funds are being utilized. The Illinois Department of Transportation announced in July 2023 the most extensive multi-year program, Rebuild Illinois, aimed at improving and repairing all modes of transportation. Governor JB Pritzker stated that over $40 billion would be invested over six years in better roads and bridges, modernized transit and aviation, and expanded and faster passenger rail service.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, JB Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois program is planning or implementing ten major projects in Chicago alone. These projects are set to improve safety and mobility on Illinois's roads and bridges with an investment of $396 million. Three out of these ten projects are scheduled for completion in 2024 while the remaining seven are projected for completion between 2025 through 2030.
Additionally, under the Rebuild Illinois program, $107 million is being invested in seven projects slated for completion in Kane County. In central Cook County too, ten projects have been planned with an investment of $220 million dedicated towards constructing roads and bridges.
As part of our duty as a media organization, we believe it is crucial to monitor and report on the allocation and utilization of these funds. We hope that our FOIA request to Schuyler County will help shed light on this important issue.
