On October 8, the American Red Cross issued a press release urging Illinois residents capable of donating blood to assist in replenishing supplies after Hurricane Helene disrupted planned drives in the Southeast. The release noted that over 100 blood drives were canceled due to Helene's landfall, resulting in thousands of uncollected blood and platelet donations. "For so many people living with urgent medical care needs, blood transfusions are essential," the release said. It emphasized that donations from the Southeast are crucial for maintaining a nationwide network stocked with necessary supplies.
